Sea Route Map

Sea Route Map

Prerequisite: None
This upgrade creates a large-scale permanent installation that depicts the safe channels, dangerous hazards, and navigable routes throughout the Tidal Expanse.

Description

The Sea Route Map stands as a masterwork of Vaitafe cartography and stone carving, a massive relief installation measuring twenty feet across and carved into a natural rock outcropping on the highest Spine Bar. The map itself is oriented to match the actual geography, with north positioned toward the open ocean and the mainland visible to the south. Generations of master carvers have contributed to this living document, their skilled hands transforming blank stone into a detailed representation of the ever-changing waterscape that surrounds the settlement.

The Spine Bars are represented by raised ridges of stone that stand several inches proud of the map's surface, their irregular shapes matching the actual contours of these permanent features. Each major Spine Bar is labeled with carved glyphs in the traditional Vaitafe script, naming them according to ancient landmarks or significant events. The stone between these ridges has been carved in varying depths to represent water depth, with the deepest channels cut several inches into the rock face and inlaid with blue-tinted shell fragments that catch the light. Shallow areas are represented by gentler depressions filled with crushed white coral, creating a visual distinction that even children can understand at a glance.

Safe passages are marked with carved lines inlaid with green-tinted shells, their paths winding between the Spine Bars like rivers through mountains. These routes are updated seasonally as the shifting sandbars migrate, with map keepers carefully grinding away old inlay and replacing it with new markings that reflect current conditions. Known hazards receive special attention: areas prone to quicksand are marked with red ochre circles, dangerous riptide zones are indicated by spiral patterns carved into the stone, and the treacherous shifting sandbars that can appear and disappear within days are represented by removable stone tiles that can be repositioned or removed entirely as conditions change.

Around the map's perimeter, a series of smaller panels carved into the surrounding rock provide crucial supplementary information. One panel shows the tidal cycle throughout a lunar month, with carved moon phases corresponding to expected water levels. Another depicts the seasonal king tides, warning when Umbra's influence creates the most dangerous conditions. A third panel illustrates safe crossing times, with carved sun and moon positions indicating when specific routes become passable or impassable. These reference panels are maintained with the same care as the main map, their information considered sacred knowledge passed down through generations of navigators.

The map is sheltered by a substantial carved overhang that protects it from the worst weather while remaining open enough to allow natural light to illuminate the carved surface throughout the day. At night, oil lamps housed in carefully positioned niches cast light across the map's face, their flames protected from wind by transparent shell panels. A broad platform of smooth stone surrounds the installation, providing space for groups to gather for navigation lessons or planning expeditions. Carved benches ring this platform, their surfaces worn smooth by countless students and travelers who have studied the map before venturing across the flats. Small storage alcoves built into the surrounding rock hold pointing sticks, measuring cords, and other tools used during instruction, while a covered cabinet protects the precious shell fragments and mineral pigments needed for map updates.

Benefits

The Sea Route Map provides invaluable navigation assistance to anyone crossing the Tidal Expanse. Characters who study the map for at least one hour before traveling gain a +4 bonus to Survival checks for navigation in the region and automatically know the locations of current hazards along their intended route. The map reduces travel time across the expanse by 25% as travelers can plot optimal courses. The sophisticated cartographic achievement generates 4 Prestige.
