Recuperation Fale

Recuperation Fale (Recovery Pavilion)

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

Each of the twelve support pillars is a masterwork of Vaitafe carving, created from driftwood timbers salvaged from the Storm Debris Zone and shaped by the settlement's finest craftspeople. The carvings depict scenes of healing and recovery: ocean waves bringing renewal, sea turtles representing patience and longevity, and stylized figures of ancestors known for their strength in overcoming hardship. The wood is treated with oils that protect against salt air while bringing out the natural grain patterns, and the pillars are substantial enough to inspire a sense of permanence and security. Between the pillars, the open sides allow recovering patients unobstructed views of the tidal expanse, the changing play of light on water, and the rhythmic movement of waves, all of which are considered essential elements of the healing process in Vaitafe tradition.

The floor platform is constructed from smoothly planed boards fitted tightly together, covered with multiple layers of finely woven mats that provide cushioning and warmth. These mats are replaced weekly to ensure cleanliness and are woven in calming patterns of waves and spirals that please the eye without overwhelming the senses. Six comfortable sleeping platforms are arranged around the perimeter of the fale, each one positioned between pillars to provide a sense of individual space while maintaining the communal atmosphere that Vaitafe healing traditions emphasize. Each platform has thick padding made from layered mats stuffed with dried sea grass, providing firm support while remaining comfortable for extended rest. Lightweight woven screens on wooden frames can be positioned around any sleeping platform when a patient requires additional privacy or protection from breeze, but these are used sparingly as the open air is considered vital to recovery.

The central area of the fale remains open, containing only a low table where the tohunga or healers can prepare medicines, a stone vessel always filled with fresh water, and several wooden benches where visitors can sit with recovering patients without disturbing others. Overhead, bundles of aromatic coastal plants hang from the roof beams: dried lavender to promote sleep, sea fennel to clear airways, and sweet grass whose gentle scent creates a peaceful atmosphere. The open design means the fale is filled with natural sounds: the constant rhythm of waves, the calls of seabirds, the whisper of wind through the thatching. These sounds, rather than being viewed as disturbances, are considered part of the healing environment, connecting patients to the life force of the ocean that sustains the Vaitafe people. During the day, dappled sunlight filters through gaps in the thatching, creating ever-changing patterns of light and shadow. At night, shell oil lamps hung from the pillars provide soft illumination without disturbing those who sleep, while the open sides allow patients to watch the stars and moon, maintaining connection with the celestial cycles that govern the tides.

A dedicated healer maintains constant presence in the fale during waking hours, checking on patients, administering medicines, helping with movement and exercise as recovery progresses, and simply providing companionship to those far from family. This healer also ensures that the space remains tranquil, limiting visitors when necessary and maintaining the peaceful atmosphere essential for recuperation. Patients typically spend three to seven days in the fale following acute illness or injury, though some with chronic conditions may return regularly for extended rest periods. The open design and ocean breezes mean the fale is particularly beneficial for patients with respiratory ailments, as the salt-laden air helps clear congestion and strengthen lungs.

Benefits

The Recuperation Fale generates 2 Prestige, demonstrating the settlement's sophisticated approach to healthcare and patient comfort. Characters recovering from injury or disease who rest in the fale for at least 8 hours gain an additional 2 hit points beyond normal rest healing due to the restorative environment. Characters suffering from respiratory conditions, fevers, or exhaustion who spend at least 24 hours in the fale gain a +2 bonus on all Constitution checks to recover from these conditions. The peaceful atmosphere reduces the time required to recover from the fatigued or sickened conditions by one day. The fale can accommodate up to 6 recovering patients simultaneously, and its presence encourages settlers to remain in the community even when ill, reducing the risk of disease spread through poorly managed home care.
