Rainwater Collection System

Rainwater Collection System

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The system begins with a series of collection surfaces positioned on the roofs of existing structures and on specially constructed elevated platforms. These surfaces are crafted from tightly woven pandanus leaves treated with natural resins to make them water-resistant, creating smooth, sloped planes that guide rainwater toward carved wooden gutters. The gutters themselves are hollowed from driftwood timbers, their interiors polished smooth by careful work with shell and stone tools. Each gutter is mounted at a precise angle using supports carved from weather-resistant mangrove wood, ensuring water flows steadily toward collection points without pooling or stagnating.

The channels that carry water from the gutters to the cisterns are true works of art, carved from stone and hardwood in graceful curves that follow the natural contours of the sandbar. These channels are approximately eight inches wide and four inches deep, their surfaces inscribed with traditional patterns that serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. The spiral and wave designs actually help slow the water's flow during heavy downpours, reducing erosion and allowing sediment to settle before the water reaches storage. At regular intervals along each channel, woven screens made from fine coconut fiber filter out leaves, sand, and debris, keeping the collected water as clean as possible.

The heart of the system consists of six large cisterns positioned at strategic points across the settlement. Each cistern is a masterwork of construction, built from fitted stones mortared with a mixture of crushed shell, coral powder, and natural resins that creates a watertight seal capable of withstanding the harsh salt air and occasional tidal flooding. The cisterns are partially buried in the sand for stability and temperature regulation, with only their top portions visible above ground. These upper sections are crowned with beautifully carved wooden covers that protect the water from contamination while allowing access for drawing water and maintenance. The covers feature carved representations of rain clouds and falling water, honoring the gift of fresh rain in this ocean-dominated environment.

Each cistern holds approximately 1,500 gallons of water and is fitted with multiple draw points at different heights. Wooden spigots carved with sealing washers made from tightly woven harakeke allow residents to draw water without disturbing sediment that settles at the bottom. A clever overflow system connects the cisterns, ensuring that when one fills during heavy rainfall, excess water is automatically directed to the next cistern in the network rather than being wasted. The final cistern in each chain has an overflow channel that directs excess water to gardens and planted areas, where it can still provide benefit even after storage capacity is reached.

Benefits

The Rainwater Collection System generates 2 Prestige, demonstrating the settlement's ingenuity in adapting to the challenging environment. The system provides sufficient freshwater storage to support up to 50 residents during normal rainfall patterns. During the rainy season (Rainsong and Mistfall), the cisterns typically remain at capacity, while during drier months they provide a reliable buffer against water scarcity. Characters who drink from the cisterns enjoy water free from salt and other impurities, preventing dehydration-related penalties. Additionally, the reliable water supply grants a +2 bonus to Survival checks related to finding or preserving drinking water within the settlement.
