Preservation Platform

Preservation Platform I

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The platform's surface is covered with multiple layers of woven palm frond mats that can be removed for cleaning or replaced as they wear. These mats provide a clean, breathable surface for laying out foods. Along the platform's length run parallel wooden rails where additional drying racks can be hung, creating multiple levels of drying surfaces that maximize the use of vertical space. The racks themselves are woven from thin strips of bamboo or palm midribs, creating a mesh that allows air circulation around the drying foods from all sides. During the day, these racks are exposed to full sun, while at night or during sudden rain showers, woven palm covers can be quickly pulled over them for protection.

At one end of the platform sits a small smoking chamber, a box-like structure constructed from green wood and sealed with mud and sand to retain smoke while allowing controlled ventilation. The chamber measures approximately six feet on each side and features multiple internal racks where foods can be hung or laid while smoke from smoldering driftwood below slowly cures them. Different woods produce different smoke flavors, and the preservation masters know precisely which combinations create the most desirable results for various foods. Coconut husks add a sweet note to fish, while certain types of driftwood impart savory depth to meats. The smoking process transforms fresh foods into intensely flavored preserved goods that can last for many months.

Under the main platform, the shaded space provides storage for firewood, tools, and a work area where foods are prepared for preservation. Fish are cleaned and filleted, meats are trimmed and sliced, and fruits and vegetables are cut into thin pieces that will dry quickly. A washing station with ceramic vessels holds seawater for initial cleaning and fresh water for final rinsing. Sharp stone knives and shell scrapers hang from hooks, and woven baskets hold foods awaiting processing. The accelerated properties of Goodberry's dimensional magic affect the preservation process as well, meaning foods that would normally require days or weeks to dry properly reach ideal preservation levels in just 20% of that time. Fish that might take a week to sun-dry now reaches perfect preservation in less than two days.

The platform operates on a continuous cycle, with new foods being prepared and laid out for drying while previously dried items are collected and moved to storage. The preservation masters develop an intuitive understanding of the process, recognizing when foods have reached optimal dryness by their appearance, texture, and weight. Over-drying makes foods tough and brittle, while under-drying leaves moisture that can cause spoilage. The perfectly preserved products are lightweight, intensely flavored, shelf-stable for months, and quickly rehydrate when soaked in water or added to cooking pots. These preserved foods form the foundation of the settlement's food security, ensuring the community can weather any crisis with adequate nutrition.

Benefits

The Basic Preservation Platform generates 2 Prestige, demonstrating the settlement's food security planning. The platform processes 400 pounds of fresh food monthly into 120 pounds of preserved products (fish, meat, fruits, vegetables), which store indefinitely and sell for premium prices, generating 250 gold per month. The preserved foods provide emergency rations that can sustain the settlement during storms, droughts, or other disruptions to fresh food supply.
