Pataka

Pataka (Storehouse)

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

Each post is both structural and symbolic. Guardian figures carved near the base ward against theft, while spirals wind upward to represent the cycle of abundance and scarcity. Near the top, images of fish, birds, shellfish, and bundled plants remind the people of the sources of their stored wealth. The posts are sunk deep into the sand and reinforced with packed stones, while carved cross-bracing adds stability and creates a shaded, dry space beneath the platform.

The storage platform measures thirty by twenty feet and is built from tightly fitted planks sealed with pitch to block moisture from below. The walls are made from woven harakeke backed with thin wood, creating a layered barrier that keeps out rain while allowing gentle airflow. The steeply pitched roof sheds water quickly, with carved seabird finials along the ridgeline believed to offer spiritual protection and warn of danger.

Access is controlled by a single ladder that can be pulled up when the storehouse is closed. Inside, the space is carefully organized with partitions dividing food types and goods. Fish hang from rafters to dry, baskets hold preserved vegetables and herbs, and large clay vessels store oils, water, and salt. Shelves hold tools, nets, ceremonial objects, and valuable trade goods. The storehouse keeper maintains detailed inventories using carved tally sticks and knotted cords, relying on memory and tradition rather than written records.

Ventilation is managed through small adjustable vents near the roof, allowing heat and moisture to escape when needed. The shaded space beneath the platform is used for bulky storage and provides a cool resting place during hot days. The Pataka is always visible from the Marae and the Chief’s Whare, adding a layer of security, and the keeper often sleeps inside when valuable goods are stored. More than a practical structure, the Pataka is a symbol of planning, stability, and communal trust. Its full shelves bring confidence, and its presence reminds the people that they are building for tomorrow, not just surviving today.

Benefits

The Pataka generates 2 Prestige, as a well-stocked and properly maintained storehouse demonstrates the settlement's prosperity and organizational capability. The elevated storage protects food supplies from spoilage, effectively extending the shelf life of preserved goods. This allows the settlement to maintain a strategic reserve of supplies, providing a buffer against lean times or unexpected disasters. The storehouse can hold up to 6 months of food supplies, or equivalent volumes of trade goods and valuable resources.
