Hale

Hale (Simple Huts)

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

Supported by four carved foundation posts, the Hale stands three feet above the sand. Its floor is made of fitted wooden planks that allow airflow and drainage, while the walls use woven flax panels reinforced with thin slats for durability. The simple square layout maximizes usable space, with a single doorway and a small opposite window providing light and ventilation. Modest eaves protect the walls from rain, and residents often add personal carvings or paint to the visible rafters beneath the roof.

Inside, the single room serves every purpose. A raised sleeping platform sits along one wall, leaving room for a central stone-lined fire pit used for warmth and light. Storage is cleverly built into the structure, using shelves, pegs, and baskets to keep tools and personal items organized. A small work area near the window takes advantage of natural light for crafting, eating, or maintenance, adjusted to suit the resident’s trade or routine.

Residents often personalize their Hale with small touches like carved door panels, shell decorations, or potted plants. The huts are typically built in close clusters, forming tight-knit micro-communities where neighbors can talk easily while still maintaining privacy. Limited space outside each Hale is used for sitting, crafting, or small gardens, adding vibrancy to the clustered neighborhoods along the Spine Bars.

Though humble, the Hale plays an important social role by providing accessible, affordable housing for those between life stages or seeking solitude. Its simple design makes construction and upkeep easy, ensuring that every member of the settlement can have a private home of their own. The Hale embodies the belief that dignity and belonging are not measured by size or ornamentation but by care, purpose, and connection to the community.
