Exotic Goods Vault

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The vault's walls represent the pinnacle of Vaitafe construction techniques adapted for maximum security. Triple-layered ironwood planks run in alternating directions, with the gaps between layers filled with compressed coral aggregate mixed with tree resin to create a material nearly as hard as stone. Small ventilation slits near the roofline allow air circulation while being too narrow for even a child's hand to pass through, each one fitted with removable bronze grilles that can be sealed during storms or security concerns. The roof consists of multiple layers of treated thatch over solid planking, designed to shed water while preventing any possibility of entry from above. Every joint and seam is reinforced with brass fittings salvaged from ships and reworked by the settlement's finest metalworkers.

The vault's single entrance is a masterwork of defensive engineering. The door itself consists of solid ironwood planks three inches thick, bound with bronze straps and fitted with three separate locking mechanisms that must all be opened in precise sequence. The outer lock uses a traditional shell-pattern key held by Duke Karthos himself. The middle lock requires a bone key entrusted to the vault master. The innermost lock employs a combination mechanism of carved wooden pins that only the head of the Merchant's Guild knows. This triple-lock system ensures that no single individual can access the vault alone, requiring cooperation and witnesses for every opening. Heavy shutters can be dropped from inside to further bar the entrance, turning the already formidable door into an impassable barrier.

Inside, the vault is organized with meticulous precision. Climate-controlled sections use traditional methods perfected over generations: sealed clay jars filled with charcoal absorb excess moisture, woven screens soaked in specific oils control humidity, and strategically placed openings create air currents that maintain stable conditions. One area specializes in textiles and dyes, storing rare tapa cloth from distant islands, precious silk salvaged from shipwrecks, and containers of dye materials worth their weight in silver. Another section houses spices and aromatic goods in sealed vessels, protecting them from the salt air that would otherwise degrade their potency. A third area contains worked goods: masterwork weapons too valuable for the common armory, intricate jewelry awaiting wealthy buyers, carved art pieces commissioned by noble collectors, and mysterious artifacts that require secure storage until scholars can determine their properties.

The vault maintains detailed inventory records using a sophisticated system of knotted cords and carved tablets, with every item tracked from deposit through withdrawal. Multiple copies of these records exist, stored in separate locations to prevent loss through accident or deliberate tampering. Merchants who store goods in the vault pay monthly fees based on both space and value, generating substantial income while providing absolute security for their investments. The vault master conducts weekly inspections, checking seals and conditions while updating records. Armed guards patrol outside during high-traffic periods, while at night the entire structure is sealed and watched by sentries positioned at discrete distances. The vault's reputation for absolute security attracts high-value trade to The Tidal Expanse, as merchants know their goods are safer here than in most mainland cities, protected by Vaitafe honor, clever engineering, and the watchful presence of Duke Karthos's authority.
