Dew Collection Nets

Dew Collection Nets

Prerequisite: None
This upgrade installs a series of fine-mesh nets positioned to capture morning dew and sea mist, providing a supplementary freshwater source that operates passively without requiring fuel or constant attention.

Description

The Dew Collection Nets rise from the highest points of the settlement like the sails of anchored ships, their fine mesh surfaces oriented to catch the moisture-laden winds that sweep across the tidal flats each morning. Each net is woven from the finest coconut fiber, processed and re-processed until the individual strands are thin enough to create a mesh so fine that water droplets cannot pass through but air flows freely. The weaving process takes skilled craftspeople weeks to complete a single net, but the resulting fabric can last for years with proper care. The nets are dyed a deep blue-black using squid ink and plant extracts, a color that maximizes heat absorption during the day and promotes condensation during the cool morning hours.

Each collection station consists of a rectangular net approximately fifteen feet wide and ten feet tall, stretched between two sturdy poles carved from salvaged ship timbers. The poles are set at a slight angle, leaning into the prevailing wind to maximize the net's exposure to moisture-carrying air currents. The bottom edge of each net is fitted into a carved wooden trough that runs the full width of the installation, collecting the water that condenses on the mesh and trickles downward. These troughs are angled to direct collected water toward clay vessels positioned at one end, where it accumulates throughout the night and early morning hours.

The positioning of the nets reflects generations of observation about wind patterns and moisture content. The primary installations face the direction from which the morning mists typically arrive, usually the seaward side of the settlement where cool ocean air meets the warmer land. Secondary nets are positioned to catch the afternoon sea breezes that sometimes carry enough moisture to produce additional collection. The nets are mounted on pivoting frames that allow them to be adjusted as wind patterns shift with the seasons, and during storms they can be furled like sails to prevent damage from high winds.

The water collected from the nets is remarkably pure, having condensed directly from the air without ever touching the ground or passing through soil. This makes it ideal for drinking, cooking, and medicinal preparations where water purity is essential. On good mornings with heavy mist, a single net can collect up to five gallons of water, though typical collection averages two to three gallons per net. The collection vessels are emptied each morning by dedicated water gatherers who transfer the precious liquid to the settlement's main cisterns. During the dry season when other water sources run low, the dew nets often provide the margin of survival, their steady trickle of pure water supplementing depleted reserves.

Benefits

The Dew Collection Nets generate 2 Prestige, showcasing the settlement's innovative approach to water harvesting and their ability to extract resources from the very air. The net system produces approximately 25 gallons of freshwater per day under favorable conditions, providing a reliable supplement to other water sources that requires no fuel and minimal labor. The exceptional purity of dew-collected water makes it preferred for preparing medicines and ceremonial drinks, granting a +1 bonus to Craft (Alchemy) and Heal checks when this water is used. Additionally, the passive nature of the collection system means it continues operating even when the settlement's workforce is occupied with other tasks, providing water security during busy harvest seasons or times of crisis.
