Cargo Sleds

Cargo Sleds

Prerequisite: None
This upgrade provides the settlement with a fleet of specialized sleds designed for dragging heavy loads across wet sand and shallow water during low tide, essential equipment for transporting construction materials, harvested goods, and salvaged items across the tidal flats.

Description

Each sled is constructed from broad planks of lightweight but sturdy wood, carefully shaped and bound together with strips of woven coconut fiber rope that allows slight flexibility without compromising structural integrity. The runners beneath are made from smooth, polished hardwood carved into wide, flat shapes that distribute weight evenly across wet sand, preventing the sled from sinking even when heavily loaded. The front edges of the runners curve gracefully upward like the prow of a canoe, allowing the sled to glide over obstacles and slide smoothly across both wet sand and shallow puddles without catching or digging in.

The sled platforms are reinforced with crossbeams and feature raised edges to prevent cargo from sliding off during transport. Rows of holes drilled along these edges allow for the threading of securing ropes, enabling loads to be firmly lashed down against shifting during movement. The surface of each sled is carved with shallow drainage channels that allow water to flow through rather than pooling on top, keeping cargo dry even when the sled passes through shallow tidal pools or is splashed by waves.

At the front of each sled, a carved hardwood yoke is attached via sturdy rope harnesses, designed to be pulled by teams of two to six people depending on the load weight. The yoke features traditional Vaitafe designs of strength and endurance, carved motifs of legendary ancestors known for their mighty deeds. These carvings are not merely decorative but serve as visual reminders of the physical strength and teamwork required to move heavy loads across difficult terrain. Padded sections wrapped in woven fiber protect the shoulders of those pulling, distributing the strain evenly and preventing injury during long hauls.

The sleds are stored in an open-sided shed built on one of the higher sections of the Spine Bars, protecting them from the most extreme weather while keeping them readily accessible. The storage area is organized so that different sizes of sleds can be quickly selected based on the task at hand. Small sleds suitable for one or two pullers are kept near the front, while the largest sleds capable of moving entire felled trees or massive salvaged timbers are positioned where teams can easily access them. Maintenance supplies including coconut oil for lubricating runners, spare rope for repairs, and tools for adjustments are kept in carved wooden boxes hanging from the shed's support posts.
