Canoe Channels

Canoe Channels

Prerequisite: None
This upgrade establishes a network of carefully maintained waterways through the tidal flats, providing safe and efficient routes for canoe traffic between different areas of the settlement and beyond.

Description

Each channel is marked at regular intervals with distinctive carved poles that rise from the water during high tide and tower above the exposed sand during low tide. These marker poles are carved from ironwood and feature the traditional Vaitafe spiral patterns that represent the journey of water from the deep ocean to the shore and back again. The tops of the poles are painted in bright colors, red for the main channels leading to open water, blue for internal routes between settlement areas, and white for secondary passages that require more skill to navigate. At night, the marker poles support small oil lamps in protective housings, creating strings of flickering lights that guide late travelers safely home.

The channels themselves follow the natural contours of the tidal flow, taking advantage of deeper depressions in the sand and avoiding areas prone to quicksand or strong cross-currents. A dedicated crew of channel keepers makes daily rounds during low tide, using long poles to probe the sand depth and identify any changes from recent storms or seasonal shifts. They clear debris from the channels, removing driftwood, tangled seaweed, and any hazards that could damage canoe hulls or foul outrigger arms. These keepers also maintain detailed mental maps of the channels, knowledge passed down through families and considered one of the most valuable skills in the settlement.

Where channels split or merge, the water is often slightly deeper, creating natural gathering points. At these junctions, the channel keepers have positioned carved stone seats just below the waterline during high tide, allowing paddlers to rest while remaining seated in their canoes. Small floating platforms made from bundled reeds and tied with coconut fiber provide emergency rest stops for those caught by changing tides, each one anchored but able to rise and fall with the water level.

The channel network extends far beyond the immediate settlement area, reaching out to prime fishing grounds, the Pearl Fields, and neighboring sandbars. Some channels are only passable during specific tide phases, and detailed knowledge of the timing is essential. The channel keepers maintain a large carved board near the central whare, updated daily with information about which routes are currently safe, which require expert navigation, and which should be avoided entirely. This board has become a central gathering point each morning as residents plan their day's activities around the ever-changing map of navigable waters.

Benefits

Travel time by canoe within the Tidal Expanse is reduced by 50%, and all water-based Survival and Profession (sailor) checks within settlement waters gain a +3 bonus. The channels allow trade canoes to reach the settlement reliably, increasing potential trade opportunities. Once per week, a merchant vessel arrives via the channels with goods worth 2d100 gold pieces available for purchase or trade. This upgrade generates 3 Prestige.
