Archery Butts

Archery Butts

Prerequisite: None
This upgrade establishes a dedicated practice range where warriors hone their skills with bows and throwing spears, ensuring the settlement maintains a corps of deadly accurate ranged combatants capable of striking enemies before they reach the palisade walls.

Description

At the far end of the range stand the targets themselves, a varied collection designed to simulate different combat scenarios. Simple circular targets made from woven palm fronds stuffed with dried seagrass serve for basic accuracy practice, their layers dense enough to stop arrows yet loose enough to allow easy extraction. More complex targets include man-shaped figures crafted from bundled reeds and dressed in old fishing nets, teaching warriors to aim for vital areas on human opponents. Several targets are mounted on wooden posts that can swivel in the wind, creating moving targets that test reflexes and timing. The most challenging setup consists of targets floating on buoyant driftwood platforms in a large tidal pool, forcing archers to judge distance across water and compensate for the targets' gentle bobbing motion.

The shooting line features several different stations catering to various skill levels and training purposes. Raised platforms allow practice from elevated positions, simulating shots from the watchmen's towers or palisade walls. Ground-level positions marked with painted lines teach proper stance and form. Wooden barriers force archers to shoot around obstacles, developing the ability to find angles during actual combat when cover and concealment become factors. Along one side of the range, a covered pavilion provides shade for instructors and storage for equipment, its roof supported by carved posts depicting famous Vaitafe archers from tribal history whose legendary accuracy serves as inspiration for current warriors.

The spear throwing section occupies the southern portion of the range, with its own set of specialized targets. Heavy timber frames hold thick boards scored with concentric circles, their surfaces bearing the scars of thousands of thrown spears. Closer targets focus on power and penetration, while distant marks test the warriors' ability to judge trajectory over long distances. The Vaitafe favor a distinctive overhand throwing technique that generates tremendous force, and the range includes marked positions showing optimal throwing distances for different spear lengths and weights. Practice spears with blunted points rest in racks along the throwing line, their balance identical to combat weapons but safe for constant use.

Daily practice sessions follow a strict regimen overseen by master instructors who have devoted their lives to the ranged arts. New warriors begin with close-range targets and light draw-weight bows, gradually progressing to longer distances and more powerful weapons as their strength and accuracy improve. Competition is encouraged, with monthly contests awarding recognition to the most accurate archers and spear throwers. The best performers earn the honor of serving as the settlement's primary ranged defenders, taking positions on the walls and towers where their skills provide crucial protection. The constant hum of bowstrings and the rhythmic thunk of spears striking targets have become familiar sounds of daily life in The Tidal Expanse, reassuring reminders that the settlement's defenders are ever-sharpening their deadly craft.

Benefits

All settlement archers and spear throwers who train regularly at the Archery Butts gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls with ranged weapons and increase their range increment by 10 feet due to constant practice in coastal wind conditions. Once per month, the settlement can hold a marksmanship competition that grants the top three performers a +2 bonus to ranged attack rolls for the following week. Warriors trained at the butts gain the ability to make called shots at a reduced penalty (only -2 instead of -4). This upgrade generates 3 Prestige, as the disciplined practice and skilled marksmen demonstrate the settlement's martial readiness and the Vaitafe tradition of deadly ranged combat.
