Description

The Anchorage Point is located where the Tidal Expanse meets deeper ocean waters, positioned in a natural depression where the seabed remains submerged even during the lowest spring tides. Here, master builders have sunk massive anchor stones weighing several tons each, carved from dense volcanic rock brought from distant quarries. These foundation stones are connected by heavy chains forged from iron and treated with rendered fat to resist corrosion from the salt water. The chains lie on the seabed, creating a permanent anchoring system that allows vessels to moor securely regardless of tide or current.

Above water, the facility consists of a substantial floating dock system constructed from massive logs of buoyant ironwood, each one hollowed and sealed with pitch to increase flotation. The dock sections are lashed together with thick rope made from twisted coconut fiber, creating a flexible structure that rises and falls with the tides while remaining stable enough for cargo transfer. The main dock measures sixty feet in length and twelve feet wide, with smaller side platforms that can accommodate up to four large vessels simultaneously. Carved tiki figures mounted on the dock's corners serve both decorative and spiritual purposes, their fierce expressions meant to ward off misfortune and ensure safe harbor.

Multiple mooring posts, each carved from single pieces of hardwood and reinforced with iron bands, rise from the dock's surface at regular intervals. These posts are tall enough to handle the twelve-foot tidal variation, with carved notches at different heights to accommodate various vessel types and tide conditions. Heavy mooring rings, each capable of bearing the weight of a fully loaded merchant vessel in rough seas, are bolted through the posts with iron fittings that receive regular inspection and maintenance. Additional anchor buoys, carved from lightweight wood and painted in distinctive patterns, float at strategic positions around the anchorage to guide approaching vessels to safe mooring positions.

A covered shelter built on the main dock provides protection for harbor workers and visiting crew members during loading and unloading operations. This structure houses essential equipment: spare rope coiled in precise patterns on wooden frames, replacement chain links, spare anchor stones on wheeled carts, and the tools needed for dock repairs. A carved message board displays current tide information, weather warnings, and harbor regulations in multiple languages and symbol systems. Adjacent to the shelter, a small boat launch allows shore boats and canoes to ferry passengers and light cargo between the anchorage and the settlement proper, maintaining connection regardless of the tide state on the flats.

The anchorage includes a system of guide ropes strung between buoys that extend from the deep water mooring area toward the settlement, marking the safest channel for vessels attempting to move closer during high tide. These ropes are marked with shells and colored cloth at regular intervals, allowing navigators to follow the channel even in poor visibility. During storm season, additional protective measures include heavy sea anchors that can be deployed from the moored vessels to reduce strain on the dock system, and emergency breakaway points in the mooring chains that prevent catastrophic damage if a vessel is torn loose by extreme conditions. The entire facility represents a marriage of traditional Vaitafe seamanship with practical engineering, creating a harbor that serves both local fishing craft and visiting merchant ships with equal reliability.

Benefits

The Anchorage Point allows the settlement to accommodate merchant vessels, fishing boats, and other craft too large to navigate the shallow tidal channels. This increases trade opportunities and attracts visiting merchants who previously could not reach the settlement. The facility generates 25 gold per month in docking fees and handling charges. The professional maritime infrastructure generates 5 Prestige.
