Ancestor Shrine Complex

Ancestor Shrine Complex

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The heart of the complex is a collection of memorial posts, each one representing a departed community member. These posts range from four to eight feet in height depending on the status and accomplishments of the honored dead, carved from driftwood or imported hardwoods and positioned in curved rows that follow the arc of the complex's layout. Each post is unique, bearing the name of the deceased carved in traditional script, along with symbols representing their achievements, their family lineage, and their spiritual totems. The faces of many posts display stylized representations of the departed, not realistic portraits but spiritual likenesses that capture essence rather than physical appearance. Fresh offerings accumulate at the base of each post: shells arranged in meaningful patterns, woven harakeke bands in family colors, flowers that bloom despite the salt air, and small carved tokens left by descendants and friends.

A covered pavilion structure anchors one end of the complex, built in the traditional open-sided style with a peaked roof thatched with treated grasses that shed rain while allowing air to flow freely beneath. The roof beams are carved with genealogies that trace family lines back through generations, connecting the present community to ancestors whose names are remembered in oral tradition even if their physical remains rest elsewhere. This pavilion serves as a gathering place during memorial ceremonies and provides shelter for those who come to spend extended time in meditation and prayer. Stone benches line the interior, their surfaces worn smooth by countless visitors who have sat in quiet contemplation while gazing out at the memorial posts and the endless expanse beyond.

The central courtyard is surfaced with white sand gathered from the purest sections of the tidal flats and raked into patterns that represent waves, spirals, and other symbols significant to Vaitafe cosmology. This sand is carefully maintained, refreshed monthly to keep it clean and bright, and raked into new patterns before major ceremonies. A stone-lined path winds through the courtyard, allowing visitors to walk among the memorial posts without disturbing the raked sand patterns. At the center of the courtyard stands a larger post carved with generic ancestral imagery, representing all ancestors collectively, both those specifically memorialized here and the countless generations whose individual names have been lost to time but whose collective wisdom and sacrifice made the present community possible.

The complex is bordered by a living fence of hardy coastal plants that thrive in the accelerated growth environment of the dimensional bubble. Salt-tolerant shrubs with glossy leaves create a natural wall that defines the sacred space while remaining low enough not to obstruct views of the ocean. These plants bloom in rotation throughout the seasons, ensuring that the complex is always adorned with some form of natural color and life. Between the shrubs, at regular intervals, are small alcoves where braziers can be lit during ceremonies, their flames creating a perimeter of light that echoes the protective ring formed by the Tiki Guardians on a larger scale. The care of the complex is a sacred duty, with a dedicated keeper who tends the memorial posts, refreshes offerings, maintains the raked sand patterns, and ensures that the space remains a fitting place to honor those who shaped the community with their lives.

Benefits

The Ancestor Shrine Complex generates 5 Prestige, representing the community's deep connection to tradition and the honored dead. Once per week, any character can spend one hour in meditation at the complex to seek ancestral guidance. At the end of this meditation, the character may ask a single yes or no question about a course of action they are considering. The GM rolls 1d100: on a result of 01-80, the ancestors provide accurate guidance (yes or no); on 81-100, they remain silent and provide no answer. Additionally, any character who spends at least 30 minutes paying respects at the complex gains a +2 bonus on Knowledge (history) and Knowledge (local) checks for the next 24 hours, as connection with ancestral memory enhances understanding of the past. The complex also serves as consecrated ground for funeral rites and memorial ceremonies.
