Ahu (Altar Platform)

Ahu (Altar Platform)

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The platform's foundation consists of large anchor stones driven deep into the compacted sand beneath, extending below the waterline to ensure stability even during the most violent storms and highest king tides. These foundation stones are invisible to the eye, but their presence gives the Ahu its unmovable quality, making it one of the few structures in the settlement that truly feels permanent. The visible construction rises in three distinct tiers, each level slightly smaller than the one below, creating a stepped pyramid effect that allows for multiple surfaces on which offerings can be placed.

The lowest tier serves as the approach level, accessible by a series of wide stone steps on the side facing the settlement. These steps are cut from single pieces of stone and show traditional wave patterns carved into their risers, a visual reminder that all worship flows from and returns to the ocean. The second tier provides the main offering surface, its flat top worn smooth by countless hands placing gifts of food, flowers, shells, and carved tokens. The highest tier, smaller and more intimate, is reserved for the most sacred offerings and can only be reached by standing on the second level.

Four carved posts stand at the corners of the main offering level, each about six feet tall and topped with stylized representations of important spiritual concepts: the first shows an ancestor figure with traditional moko patterns, the second depicts a leaping dolphin symbolizing guidance, the third features a coiled wave representing the ocean's power, and the fourth displays a full moon over water honoring the tidal forces that govern life here. These posts are wrapped with fresh harakeke leaves during ceremonies and adorned with shells and feathers that click and whisper in the constant sea breeze.

The Ahu's surface is never completely bare. Offerings accumulate throughout each day as individuals stop to give thanks or ask for favor from the ancestors and ocean spirits. Fresh fish, carefully arranged shells, woven palm fronds, flowers from the settlement's gardens, bowls of sea salt, and small carved figures all find their way to the platform. The settlement's priest visits twice daily at low tide to refresh the offerings, returning degraded items to the sea with proper prayers while arranging new gifts in traditional patterns. Between these formal tending sessions, anyone in the community can approach the Ahu to leave an offering or simply stand in its presence to pray, making it a living center of spiritual life rather than a monument visited only during formal ceremonies.
