Adze and Chisel Works

Description

Inside, the workshop is organized around the fundamental processes of traditional tool-making. The primary work area features heavy benches positioned near the windows to maximize natural light, essential for the precise work of stone knapping. Here, master toolmakers practice the ancient art of flaking stone to create sharp edges, using hammerstones and antler punches to carefully remove flakes and shape adze blades, chisel tips, and scraper edges. The process requires exceptional skill and experience, as a single misplaced strike can ruin hours of work. Basalt, obsidian, and other suitable stones are selected for their grain structure and knapping qualities, with master toolmakers able to read the stone and predict how it will fracture. The rhythmic tapping of stone on stone fills the workshop during working hours, punctuated by the occasional sharp crack when a particularly large flake is removed. Leather pads protect the workers' hands and laps, and the floor is covered with woven mats that are regularly shaken out to collect stone chips that would otherwise make walking treacherous.

A separate section of the workshop focuses on shell tool production, taking advantage of the Tidal Expanse's abundant shell resources. Large conch shells are processed into adze blades for working softer materials, their natural curve providing an efficient cutting edge when properly shaped. Clam and oyster shells become scrapers for preparing hides and smoothing wood. Sharkskin, stretched over wooden blocks and frames, creates files and sanding tools of various grades depending on the size and arrangement of the denticles. The shell work area maintains large water basins where shells are soaked to prevent cracking during shaping, and the distinctive smell of processed shell, salt, and fish oil permeates this part of the workshop. Finished shell tools, while not as durable as stone implements, are lighter, easier to replace, and perfectly suited for many daily tasks throughout the settlement.

The hafting and finishing area occupies the rear portion of the workshop, where stone and shell blades are mounted to wooden handles to create complete, functional tools. This process demands as much skill as creating the blades themselves, as improper mounting renders even the finest stone edge useless. Handles are shaped from selected hardwoods, with grooves and notches carved to receive the blade precisely. Traditional lashing techniques using braided harakeke fiber, sinew, or coconut cord secure the blade, with some handles featuring additional refinements like wrapped grips or carved designs. Master toolmakers test each completed tool personally, using it on scrap materials to ensure proper balance, secure mounting, and effective cutting action. Tools that pass inspection receive a maker's mark burned or carved into the handle, guaranteeing quality and allowing craftspeople throughout the settlement to request specific toolmakers' work.

The Adze and Chisel Works serves as the foundation for virtually all other crafts in the settlement. Carvers depend on sharp, well-balanced adzes and chisels for their intricate work. Builders need heavy-duty adzes for shaping structural timbers. Food preparation requires specialized shell scrapers and cutting tools. The workshop maintains a repair and resharpening service, ensuring that tools throughout the settlement remain in peak condition. Toolmakers also create custom implements for specific purposes, working with craftspeople to design specialized tools that make difficult tasks possible. The workshop attracts buyers from other settlements and passing traders, as quality tools are universally valued and Vaitafe stone-working techniques produce implements renowned for their durability and effectiveness. Apprentices train for years to master the subtle arts of reading stone, controlling flaking, and achieving the perfect marriage of blade and handle.
