Trade Winds Favor

Trade Winds Favor

Prerequisite: Tribute House
A blessing upon the winds and currents that guide merchant vessels unerringly toward the Tidal Expanse, ensuring a steady stream of traders seeking the settlement's unique goods.

Description

High atop the tallest Spine Bar stands a wind shrine constructed from the bones of a great whale that beached itself during the settlement's founding, its skeleton arranged into an intricate lattice that catches and channels the ocean breezes. Strips of enchanted cloth woven from sea-silk flutter from every bone, their colors shifting to match the sky and their movements tracing patterns that speak to those who know how to read them. At the shrine's heart hangs a massive conch shell that hums with a deep, resonant tone whenever merchant vessels approach from beyond the horizon.

The enchantment works upon the minds of distant traders, planting subtle urges to seek out the Tidal Expanse whenever they consider their next voyage. Captains find themselves studying charts and noticing routes they had previously overlooked. Merchants hear rumors of exceptional pearls and rare goods available nowhere else. Even those who have never heard of the settlement feel an inexplicable pull toward its coordinates, a sense that profitable opportunities await in that direction.

Once traders commit to the journey, the magic shifts to ensure their safe arrival. Winds blow favorably, currents align to speed their passage, and storms that might have blocked their path dissipate or veer away. The effect is not absolute; the magic cannot overcome determined opposition or supernatural interference. But for ordinary voyages, the Trade Winds Favor reduces travel time by nearly a third and virtually eliminates the risk of becoming lost or delayed.

A wind-reader tends the shrine, interpreting the cloth patterns to predict which merchants will arrive and what goods they seek. This foreknowledge allows the settlement to prepare appropriate inventory and negotiate from a position of strength. The wind-reader also performs weekly rituals that renew the enchantment's power, burning offerings of rare incense and singing traditional songs that the wind carries out across the dimensional boundary to touch the dreams of distant traders.

Benefits
