Tapu Enforcement

Tapu Enforcement

Prerequisite: None
Sacred boundary markers that make tapu (sacred prohibitions) physically impossible to violate within the settlement.

Description

Carved from volcanic stone and inscribed with ancient Polynesian symbols, these tapu stones mark sacred boundaries throughout Vaitafe. Each stone bears intricate patterns representing specific prohibitions - crossed spears for weapon bans, closed hands for touching restrictions, or wave symbols for water access limits.

When someone attempts to violate an active tapu, the stones respond with supernatural force. Invisible barriers block entry to forbidden areas, while those who persist find themselves paralyzed by ancestral power. The magic doesn't harm, but makes transgression impossible through divine intervention.

A dedicated tapu keeper, trained in traditional protocols, maintains the stones and adjusts restrictions as needed. This spiritual guardian understands which prohibitions serve the community and when sacred periods begin or end, ensuring the tapu system protects rather than oppresses.

Common applications include protecting the chief's private quarters during rest, safeguarding food stores from contamination, restricting access to sacred groves during ceremonies, and preventing weapons from entering peaceful gathering spaces. The system adapts to seasonal festivals and cultural observances.

Benefits

Designate up to 10 tapu zones throughout the settlement. Unauthorized entry triggers paralysis (DC 18 Will save) for 1 hour. Can forbid specific actions within zones rather than just entry. Tapu violations immediately alert the keeper regardless of distance. Grants +6 Prestige to the settlement.
