Storm Calling

Storm Calling

Prerequisite: None
A sacred altar to Tawhirimatea, the Polynesian storm god, allowing the settlement to summon devastating typhoons against distant enemies.

Description

The Storm Calling altar stands as a towering monument of lightning-struck driftwood and volcanic stone, carved with spiraling wind patterns and inlaid with pearls that gleam like captured lightning. Ancient Polynesian symbols dedicated to Tawhirimatea cover every surface, their grooves filled with silver that conducts the storm god's power.

The ritual to summon storms requires the storm caller to chant in the old tongue while burning sacred sandalwood and casting blessed salt into the four winds. As the incantation reaches its crescendo, dark clouds gather unnaturally fast, swirling into a massive typhoon that can be directed toward distant enemies.

The settlement's appointed storm caller, typically a priest or druid with deep knowledge of weather magic, serves as the conduit for Tawhirimatea's wrath. They must maintain perfect focus during the hour-long ritual, their voice rising above the growing winds as they shape the storm's fury.

The summoned typhoon manifests as a terrifying wall of wind and rain, with lightning crackling through towering clouds that can be seen for dozens of miles. Enemy fleets caught in its path face devastating winds that can snap masts like twigs and waves that tower higher than their tallest sails.

Benefits

Once per month, the settlement can summon a typhoon in a 1-mile radius at any point up to 5 miles away. The storm lasts 4 hours and deals 6d6 points of damage per hour to all ships within its area, while grounding flying creatures. The settlement itself is magically protected from its own storms. Grants +8 Prestige to the settlement.
