Description

The Ascension ritual can only be performed once per generation, transforming the settlement's ruler into something more than mortal. Duke Karthos underwent the ceremony during the third lunar eclipse after the settlement's founding, descending into the sacred waters while priests chanted invocations that had not been spoken in living memory. He remained submerged for three days, his body suffused with oceanic mana that rewrote his very essence.

The Ascended bears visible marks of their transformation. Duke Karthos's eyes now hold the shifting colors of the sea, blue-green in calm moments and storm-grey when angered. His skin carries a faint iridescence visible in certain lights. He no longer needs to breathe air, though he can do so comfortably, and salt water feels as natural to him as the air feels to ordinary mortals. His voice carries the resonance of waves, commanding attention even in whispers.

The transformation grants powers that grow stronger near the ocean. Within the settlement's waters, the Ascended can sense every creature, feel every current, and command the tides themselves with focused concentration. They can speak to sea creatures as easily as to humans, and their words carry divine weight that compels obedience from lesser beings of the deep. Even on land, they retain enhanced physical capabilities and an intuitive connection to weather patterns.

The Ascension is not without cost. The transformed leader becomes bound to the settlement in ways that transcend mere duty. They cannot remain away from the ocean for more than a month without growing weak, and their ultimate fate is tied to the community's prosperity. Should the settlement fall, the Ascended would lose their powers and likely their life. This binding ensures that the leader's interests align perfectly with those of their people.

Benefits

The settlement's leader gains the Aquatic subtype, water breathing, and a swim speed of 60 ft. Within settlement waters, they gain tremorsense 120 ft, can cast control water at will, and may communicate telepathically with any sea creature. They gain +4 to Charisma and their words function as suggestion (DC 20) against creatures with the aquatic subtype. Once per day, they may assume a hybrid form gaining +4 Str, +4 natural armor, and a bite attack for 1 hour. +12 Prestige as word spreads of the divine sea-king.
