Smokehouse Hollow

Smokehouse Hollow

Prerequisite: Communal Hearth Tree
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Smokehouse Hollow occupies a natural cave formation discovered in a rocky outcropping near the transition between the Ancient Heart and Autumn's Edge. The cave extends roughly twenty feet back into the hillside, with a ceiling that rises to twelve feet at its highest point before tapering down toward the rear. The entrance is a narrow opening only four feet wide, which has been fitted with a sturdy wooden door made from aromatic cedar planks. This door can be sealed tightly to contain smoke or opened wide to allow ventilation, with leather hinges that permit smooth operation and bronze hooks that keep it secure against wind or curious animals. The threshold is marked by smooth river stones set into the earth, worn to a gentle polish by countless footsteps carrying fresh game and retrieving preserved meats.

Inside, the hollow has been meticulously prepared for its specialized purpose. The floor is packed earth covered with a layer of fine sand, which helps absorb moisture and can be easily replaced when it becomes saturated with drippings. The walls of the cave are natural stone, dark gray granite veined with quartz that gleams faintly in the dim interior light. These stone walls provide excellent insulation, keeping the temperature relatively stable regardless of the weather outside. More importantly, they do not absorb smoke or moisture, allowing the hollow to be cleaned periodically without worrying about contamination or unwanted flavors transferring between batches of meat. At the very back of the cave, a narrow natural chimney extends upward through the rock, discovered during initial exploration and carefully enlarged just enough to provide perfect draft control without compromising the hollow's smoke-retention properties.

The smoking apparatus itself is elegantly simple yet highly effective. At the rear of the hollow, beneath the natural chimney, sits a large fire pit lined with additional stones. This pit is deliberately kept small and shallow, designed to produce smoke rather than intense heat. The smoke master carefully selects specific hardwoods for burning, each chosen for the flavors they impart. Apple wood provides a sweet, fruity smoke perfect for poultry and pork. Hickory offers a strong, hearty flavor ideal for beef and venison. Cherry wood gives a mild, slightly sweet smoke that complements fish beautifully. Maple produces a subtle, delicate smoke suitable for more tender meats. These woods are stored in a dry alcove carved into the cave wall, organized by type and kept away from moisture that might cause them to burn improperly.

Throughout the hollow, an intricate system of iron bars, chains, and hooks has been installed to maximize the smoking capacity. Sturdy iron bars span the width of the cave at varying heights, each one capable of supporting significant weight. From these bars hang dozens of hooks of different sizes, from small ones suitable for fish or small game birds to massive hooks that can hold entire deer quarters. Wooden racks constructed from green wood rest on stone supports at floor level, providing additional space for laying out strips of meat for jerky or smaller cuts that benefit from being closer to the smoke source. The entire system can be adjusted and rearranged depending on what is being smoked, allowing the smoke master to optimize air flow and smoke exposure for each specific batch.

The process of smoking meat in the hollow follows time-honored traditions refined over generations, though the magical properties of the Elderwood Grove speed the preservation. Fresh meat arrives from hunters and is immediately assessed for smoking suitability. Larger cuts are hung high where the smoke is cooler, allowing for slow, gentle preservation over days. Smaller pieces are placed on the lower racks where the smoke is denser and warmer, accelerating the process. The smoke master tends the fire constantly during active smoking, adding wood chips at precise intervals, adjusting the door opening to control airflow, and rotating pieces to ensure even exposure. Thanks to the grove's time-altering properties, what would normally require a week of smoking can be accomplished in less than two days, yet the meat emerges with the full depth of flavor and preservation that lengthy traditional smoking provides. The finished products range from fully cooked smoked hams and bacon to partially smoked meats that will be further cooked later, to completely dried jerky that can last for months without refrigeration. Each piece emerges with a rich mahogany color, a firm texture, and flavors that speak of wood smoke, careful craftsmanship, and the wild forests where the animals once lived.

Benefits

The Smokehouse Hollow dramatically extends the shelf life of meat and fish, allowing the settlement to preserve protein through all seasons. Properly smoked meat lasts 6 months without spoilage under normal storage conditions, and smoked jerky remains edible for up to 1 year. Characters with Profession (Hunter) or Survival skills who spend at least one day learning from the smoke master gain a +2 bonus to Profession checks related to preparing and preserving game for the next month. The smoked meats are highly prized, and the settlement can sell excess production for 2 gold per pound, generating monthly income of 100 gold when fully utilized. This upgrade generates 2 Prestige, as the settlement's preserved meats become known for their exceptional quality and flavor.
