Signaling Treework

Signaling Treework

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Signaling Treework converts the forest canopy into a silent communication network operating at the speed of light. Twenty five signal stations stand at strategic heights, each with mirrors and shuttered lanterns that transmit coded flashes. Any station can reach the Ranger's Outpost within three relay jumps, and redundant pathways keep communication active even if stations are obscured or compromised. Stations are positioned between fifty and seventy feet above the ground where canopy gaps create clear sightlines while remaining concealed from below. Platforms are minimal, large enough for one operator, with living branches grown into railings and anchor points. Accelerated growth strengthens these structures within weeks.

The mirrors are the most advanced components, built from polished bronze mounted on articulated arms for precise direction. The main mirror is eighteen inches across for beams that travel over half a mile, while two smaller mirrors allow redundancy and branching messages. They are backed with mercury amalgam for perfect reflection and protected by leather hoods when not in use. During daytime, operators direct reflected sunlight toward receiving stations, calculating sun position, angle, and gaps in the canopy to make flashes visible. Skill and intuition allow contact within seconds, and the flashes blend into natural dappled light, invisible to anyone on the forest floor.

At night, signaling switches to shuttered lanterns burning animal fat mixed with herbs for a steady, bright flame with minimal smoke. Hinged panels open and close in rapid succession to create patterns of light and darkness, sending the coded messages. Smooth wooden hinges allow silent operation, and polished wood reflectors focus the light into tight beams. From ground level the lanterns are difficult to notice without knowing where to look, and the height and darkness conceal them. Night signals are more visible than sunlight flashes but remain discreet enough to avoid drawing attention, especially within dense forest shadows.

The signal code uses short and long flashes to convey information quickly and clearly. Simple patterns indicate basic messages such as all clear, threat detected, or send more information. More complex messages combine patterns to represent letters, while common phrases have dedicated codes that compress full sentences into brief sequences. Rangers and defenders learn the basics during training, while advanced operators at the Ranger's Outpost and Watcher's Perches use the full vocabulary for tactical communication. Verification protocols ensure accuracy, with receiving stations sending confirmation patterns back so no message is lost to weather or error.

The network links with other defenses to create a coordinated force. Watchers can alert the Ranger's Outpost instantly, allowing rapid deployment. The outpost relays simultaneous alerts to multiple positions, and alert birds may be dispatched to locations based on flashes. In emergencies, general alarms ripple across the network in seconds, mobilizing defenders far faster than runners or horns. The stations cover the entire settlement and extend three miles outward wherever sightlines exist, transforming isolated defensive posts into a unified system. The Signaling Treework allows every part of the grove to be aware and responsive, dramatically enhancing overall security.

Benefits

The Signaling Treework provides a way of instant communication across the entire defensive network. Messages can be transmitted from any signal station to the Ranger's Outpost within 1 round (6 seconds) under clear conditions, or within 3 rounds during poor visibility. The network covers the entire settlement and all towers have clear sightlines. The network includes 25 active stations with redundant pathways ensuring communication remains possible even if up to 5 stations are compromised. This upgrade generates 3 Prestige.
