Rootcellar Complex

Rootcellar Complex

Prerequisite: Duke's Hollow Tree
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Rootcellar Complex is an underground network of chambers created within the natural spaces formed by the massive roots of the grove’s oldest trees. Goodberry carefully excavated soil around these roots without harming them, revealing a series of interconnected rooms supported entirely by living wood. The entrance sits at the base of a great oak, leading down a wide stone paved ramp that descends fifteen feet into the earth and provides easy access for workers carrying supplies.

Inside, the roots twist and arch like enormous wooden pillars, creating the walls and ceiling of the complex. A large central chamber serves as the hub, with shelves fitted into natural alcoves and multiple passageways leading to specialized rooms. The floors have been leveled and packed with gravel for drainage, with wooden supports added only where needed. The living roots provide most of the stability, and Goodberry’s magic guides their growth to maintain open, healthy spaces.

Several rooms are dedicated to food storage and take advantage of the naturally cool temperatures that stay between forty five and fifty five degrees year round. Root vegetables rest in sand filled crates, fruits sit in slatted boxes, and barrels of preserved goods line the walls. Other chambers store grains in sealed containers, preserved foods like smoked meats and cheese, and a cool spring fed room holds wine, mead, and aging spirits. The environment keeps everything fresh for long periods and prevents spoilage.

The complex also contains rooms for tools, seed stock, and a secure vault for valuables and important documents. Ventilation shafts hidden at the surface allow fresh air to move through without letting in pests or water. Oil lanterns line the corridors to provide steady light, while the floors slope gently toward sumps that collect and drain excess moisture into usable irrigation water. The entire structure is designed to remain dry, stable, and functional in every season.

Because the complex is naturally insulated, it becomes a comfortable place to work during extreme weather. Workers rest there in the summer heat or perform delicate tasks during winter. The roots continue to grow slowly over time, and the caretaker adjusts the shelving and layouts as needed. This adaptability ensures the Rootcellar Complex remains a long term foundation of food security and storage for the settlement, protecting supplies beneath the living strength of the forest.

Benefits

The Rootcellar Complex provides extensive storage capacity for the settlement's food, supplies, and valuables. The naturally cool, dark, and stable environment extends the shelf life of stored foods by 50%, reducing waste and ensuring food security through all seasons. The settlement can now stockpile 6 months' worth of food supplies for its population, providing protection against poor harvests, harsh winters, or trade disruptions. The complex grants a +2 bonus to all Profession (merchant) and Appraise checks related to food and goods storage, as proper preservation increases value. This structure generates 2 Prestige, reflecting the settlement's preparedness and wise resource management.
