Recovery Chambers

Recovery Chambers

Prerequisite: Healer's Grove
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Recovery Chambers consist of six individual healing rooms arranged in a gentle arc along the hillside just above the Healer's Grove, positioned to receive morning sunlight while remaining shaded during the afternoon heat. Each chamber is a separate small structure built from living materials, with walls created from young birch trees that were magically encouraged to grow in tight formation before being woven together and fused, their white bark providing both beauty and natural antibacterial properties. The trees continue to live and grow as they serve their architectural purpose, their roots drawing nutrients from the earth while their branches extend upward to form the framework for living roofs covered in sod and wildflowers. These green roofs provide excellent insulation, keeping the interior cool in summer and warm in winter, while also helping the structures blend harmoniously into the landscape.

Each recovery chamber measures approximately fifteen feet square, large enough to feel spacious without being so vast as to make a single patient feel isolated or lost. The interior walls are lined with panels of fragrant cedar, chosen both for its pleasant aroma and its natural resistance to moisture and decay. Wide windows fitted with shutters made from thin slices of translucent horn allow natural light to enter while providing privacy when needed, and woven reed screens can be positioned to filter the light into softer, more restful patterns. The floor is constructed of smooth wooden planks made from fallen trees, treated with natural oils that make them easy to clean while remaining soft and warm underfoot. Each chamber features a comfortable sleeping platform built into one wall, essentially a large shelf about two feet off the ground, wide enough for even the tallest patients and fitted with a thick mattress stuffed with dried grasses, soft mosses, and fragrant herbs that are replaced regularly to maintain freshness.

The furnishings in each chamber are minimal but thoughtfully chosen to provide everything a recovering patient might need. A small table beside the sleeping platform holds water, medicinal preparations, and any personal items the patient wishes to keep close. Built-in shelving in the walls provides storage for extra linens, clothing, and supplies without cluttering the floor space. A comfortable chair positioned near the window allows patients who are strong enough to sit upright, providing a change of position and a view of the forest beyond. Each chamber also contains a small brazier that can be lit on cold days, with a vent leading outside to carry smoke away while radiating gentle warmth throughout the space. Natural ventilation through carefully positioned gaps ensures fresh air circulates constantly without creating uncomfortable drafts.

The spaces between the six chambers have been developed into peaceful outdoor areas where recovering patients can spend time when their condition permits. Covered walkways connect all the structures, allowing movement even during rain, their roofs supported by living posts that sprout leaves in season. Small gardens planted with healing herbs, colorful flowers, and soothing water features provide pleasant views from the windows and peaceful destinations for short walks. Smooth stone paths wide enough for assisted walking wind through these gardens, with benches positioned at regular intervals for rest. The entire facility overlooks the Healer's Grove below, maintaining a close connection to the main medical facility while providing the quieter, more restful atmosphere essential for long-term recovery.

The Recovery Chambers operate under constant but unobtrusive supervision. Healers and attendants check on patients regularly throughout the day and night, monitoring their condition, providing medications, assisting with meals and personal care, and offering emotional support during what can be difficult recovery periods. The accelerated growth properties of the Elderwood Grove benefit patients in subtle but important ways, as fresh herbs and healing plants can be harvested daily from the surrounding gardens to create potent remedies, and any damaged furnishings or structural elements can be quickly replaced by rapidly growing plants. Meals are brought from the community kitchens but can be customized to each patient's needs and preferences, with special attention paid to foods that support healing. Visitors are welcomed during designated hours, allowing family and friends to provide comfort and companionship without disturbing the patient's rest. The atmosphere throughout the facility is one of quiet peace, gentle encouragement, and patient dedication to the slow work of healing, creating an environment where bodies can mend and spirits can recover from the trauma of serious injury or prolonged illness.
