Building upon the established oyster mushroom production, this expansion adds premium edible species and introduces medicinal varieties throughout the deeper reaches of Mossglow Hollow and into the Ancient Heart. The groves now represent a more sophisticated understanding of fungal cultivation, with different species matched to specific microenvironments within the forest.
Shiitake logs are introduced, the oak wood carefully inoculated and positioned in areas with ideal humidity and temperature. These prized mushrooms emerge in neat clusters, their rich umami flavor making them highly sought after for both home cooking and trade. Lion's mane mushrooms begin growing on hardwood logs, their magnificent cascading white formations resembling their namesake and offering both culinary excellence and cognitive benefits.
The first medicinal species join the cultivation roster. Reishi mushrooms develop their distinctive glossy, kidney-shaped caps on carefully tended logs, their bitter compounds valued by healers for immune support and longevity treatments. Turkey tail mushrooms spread in beautiful multi-colored rosettes across stumps, their medicinal properties well-documented in traditional healing practices.
The groves are now connected by narrow footpaths lined with bioluminescent moss transplanted from Mossglow Hollow, creating gentle lighting for nighttime harvesting when some species are at their peak. The pathways themselves become destinations, evening walks that showcase the forest's fungal diversity while allowing residents to understand the care that goes into sustainable cultivation.
Cultivation techniques have improved significantly through experience. Log positioning optimizes moisture retention, spawn placement ensures even colonization, and harvest timing maintains productivity without depleting the mycelium. The groves support diverse cooking traditions while providing healers with valuable medicinal ingredients that would otherwise require risky foraging in unknown areas.
