Iceden Cave

Iceden Cave

Prerequisite: Cool Stream Larder
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Iceden Cave extends forty feet back into a hillside at the northernmost edge of the Ancient Heart, where the land rises sharply and rocky outcroppings break through the forest floor. The entrance is a natural cleft in the stone, roughly six feet wide and eight feet tall, positioned on the north-facing slope where direct sunlight never penetrates. This northern exposure is crucial to the cave's effectiveness, as it remains in shade throughout the year, keeping the entrance area significantly cooler than surrounding forest. The cave mouth has been fitted with a massive insulated door constructed from triple layers of thick cedar planks, with the spaces between layers packed with dried moss and sawdust. This door weighs nearly three hundred pounds and swings on stone pivots carefully shaped and greased with animal fat, creating an effective seal when closed while still allowing one person to open it with steady effort. Iron brackets on the exterior allow the door to be barred from outside, while similar brackets inside permit it to be secured from within during winter harvesting operations.

The interior of the cave descends at a gentle slope, the floor carved smooth by ancient water flow that once ran through this channel. The walls and ceiling are solid granite, dark and damp, with a naturally arched ceiling that rises twelve feet at its highest point. This stone provides perfect insulation, maintaining remarkably stable temperatures regardless of the season above. Approximately twenty feet into the cave, the passage opens into a larger chamber roughly thirty feet in diameter, with a ceiling that domes upward to fifteen feet. The floor of this chamber has been deliberately lowered by three feet through careful excavation, creating a sunken storage pit that takes advantage of the principle that cold air sinks and settles in low areas. The excavated stone was repurposed to build a low retaining wall around the pit's perimeter, preventing ice melt from flowing back toward the entrance and creating defined storage zones within the chamber. Drainage channels carved into the floor direct any meltwater toward a narrow crack at the rear of the cave, where it seeps harmlessly into the earth rather than pooling around the precious ice stores.

The ice itself is harvested during the deepest part of winter, when one of the Crystal Streams freezes solid for several weeks. Work parties venture out during the coldest days, using large saws to cut uniform blocks measuring two feet on each side. These blocks weigh approximately sixty pounds each, heavy enough to be substantial but light enough for two workers to carry using special tongs with wooden handles. The blocks are transported to the cave on sledges pulled across the snow, then carefully stacked within the storage chamber in a specific pattern. The first layer is placed directly on the cave floor, blocks fitting together tightly with minimal gaps. Subsequent layers are stacked in an offset pattern, each block bridging the gap between two blocks below, creating a stable structure that supports its own considerable weight. Between each layer, a thin coating of sawdust and straw is spread, providing insulation and helping to slow the melting process. The walls of ice eventually rise six feet high, with narrow walking paths left between the stacks for access. Once stacking is complete, the entire mass is covered with thick layers of burlap, more sawdust, and finally dried leaves, creating an insulating blanket that can be several feet thick.

Throughout the warmer months, the Iceden Cave becomes an invaluable resource for the settlement. Ice is carefully rationed and retrieved as needed, with the ice keeper maintaining strict records of withdrawals to ensure the supply lasts through the entire summer and into early autumn. Small quantities are chipped off for medicinal purposes, packed around injuries to reduce swelling or used to bring down fevers. Larger blocks are transported to the Cool Stream Larder to supplement its cooling capabilities during the hottest days, or to the Communal Hearth Tree where they can be shaved into drinks and desserts for special occasions. Some ice is allocated to the Smokehouse Hollow, where a block placed near hanging meats during particularly hot weather helps prevent spoilage during the final stages of curing. The settlement's healers receive regular small allotments for their medicinal work, while the head cook at the Hearth Tree gets larger quantities for preservation and culinary purposes. Despite these withdrawals, the combination of the cave's excellent insulation, the carefully designed storage system, and the massive quantity of ice harvested each winter means that a significant portion of the ice typically survives until the following winter, when new ice can be added to supplement the remaining stores.

The cave serves additional functions beyond simple ice storage. The perpetually cold, dry environment makes it ideal for long-term storage of certain herbs and medicinal compounds that degrade in warmth. Clay pots of prepared remedies line shelves carved into the cave walls, their contents preserved perfectly in the frigid air. Rare seeds that require cold stratification before planting are stored in sealed containers, benefiting from months of natural refrigeration. The cave even serves as a source of naturally chilled water, as the meltwater that accumulates in collection basins carved into the stone near the ice stacks is pure, cold, and remarkably refreshing on hot summer days. Workers assigned to the cave quickly learn to dress warmly even in midsummer, as stepping through the insulated door is like traveling instantly from summer back into the depths of winter, with breath misting in the frigid air and fingers going numb within minutes without proper gloves. This dramatic temperature difference, while occasionally uncomfortable for the workers, is precisely what makes the Iceden Cave so valuable, transforming the settlement's seasonal abundance of winter ice into a year-round resource that improves food preservation, supports healing, and provides small luxuries that connect the community to the memory of winter even in the heat of summer.

Benefits

The Iceden Cave provides year-round access to ice for food preservation, medicinal uses, and cooling purposes. The facility can store approximately 150 tons of ice harvested during winter, with roughly 40% surviving through to the following autumn under optimal conditions. Ice from the cave grants a +2 bonus to Heal checks when used to treat injuries, reduce fevers, or prevent infection. The cave's cold storage extends the effectiveness of temperature-sensitive alchemical components and herbal remedies by 200%, allowing them to remain potent for three times their normal duration. This upgrade generates 3 Prestige, as reliable ice storage through summer is a mark of sophisticated resource management and foresight.
