The Forest Floor Commons is a wide, natural clearing adapted into a central gathering space for the Elderwood Grove. Rather than cutting trees, the settlement expanded an existing opening where an ancient tree once fell, creating a circular area about one hundred feet across. The ground has been carefully leveled with a blend of soil, sand, and fine gravel, forming a surface that stays firm after rain, remains comfortable for bare feet, and still allows water to nourish the surrounding roots.
The clearing is ringed by guardian trees whose trunks form a natural boundary. Their lower branches are trimmed to keep the space open while the canopy overhead provides shifting patterns of shade and sunlight. Seating circles the commons in layers: smooth log benches closest to the center, stone outcroppings and placed boulders behind them, and finally wooden backed benches tucked into the edge of the tree line. Small alcoves hidden between trunks offer quieter spots for parents or anyone needing a moment away from the bustle.
Several permanent features support gatherings of many kinds. A raised stage built from thick planks stands at one side, high enough for performers or speakers to be seen clearly from anywhere in the clearing. A large river-stone hearth sits at the center, designed for bonfires, feast preparation, or ceremonial flames. Storage spaces beneath the stage hold tools and supplies, while sturdy wooden posts around the clearing serve as anchors for awnings, decorations, merchant stalls, or training equipment depending on the day’s purpose.
Practical amenities blend into the environment. A covered well just outside the clearing provides fresh spring water with an easy pulley system and a stone trough for washing. Lamp posts crafted to resemble natural saplings hold lanterns of bioluminescent moss or oil, lighting the commons at night with a warm, even glow. Six flower-lined paths lead outward in all directions, connecting the space to key parts of the settlement and ensuring it remains the true crossroads of daily life.
