Forager's Map

Forager's Map

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Forager's Map is not a single document but rather an evolving collection of knowledge maintained by dedicated forest scouts who walk the grove daily, observing, recording, and updating the locations and conditions of hundreds of wild food sources. The central map room, housed in a small structure near the Forest Floor Commons, contains a massive three-dimensional relief map of the entire Elderwood Grove carved from wood and painted in rich detail. Colored pins and tokens mark the locations of various resources: green for edible plants, blue for medicinal herbs, yellow for useful fungi, red for berries and fruits, and white for seasonal specialty items. Each token can be flipped to show whether a location is currently harvestable or needs more time to regenerate, creating a visual system that prevents overharvesting and ensures the forest's wild populations remain healthy and productive.

Field maps are distributed throughout the grove at key gathering points, rendered on weather-resistant bark paper and protected in wooden frames. These simplified versions focus on specific regions and update weekly, noting which paths lead to ripe morel patches, where the best wild onions are currently growing, when the elderflowers will bloom, and which stands of wild ginger have recovered enough for limited harvest. Runic markers along the trails correspond to map locations, allowing even novice foragers to navigate confidently to known resource areas. The markers are carved into stones or painted on tree blazes in natural pigments that weather gracefully, blending with the forest aesthetic while remaining visible to those who know what to look for.

The map system incorporates traditional knowledge and modern observation in equal measure. Seasonal guides detail which foods are available during each month, with notes about preparation methods, nutritional content, and potential look-alike species to avoid. A master journal records observations about yearly patterns: where the ramps grow thickest, which oak trees drop the sweetest acorns, when the wild strawberries ripen earliest, and how weather patterns affect mushroom fruiting. This accumulated wisdom transforms the forest from an unpredictable wilderness into a reliable source of supplemental food and medicine, though always with the understanding that nature's patterns may shift and surprises are part of the relationship.

The dimensional magic of the grove creates unique foraging opportunities, as wild plants respond to the accelerated growth conditions by producing multiple harvests throughout their normal seasons. Wild asparagus sends up spears every few days in spring rather than once, and morel mushrooms fruit in several waves throughout their season instead of a single flush. This abundance must be carefully managed to avoid depleting root systems and mycelial networks, making the map's regeneration tracking even more critical. Certain areas are designated as seed banks, never harvested but allowed to spread naturally, ensuring genetic diversity and future populations.

Educational foraging walks depart from the map room several times per week, led by experienced scouts who teach identification skills, ethical harvesting techniques, and the subtle art of reading the forest's signs. These walks become social events as much as practical training, with participants sharing recipes and preservation methods while filling their baskets with wild treasures. Children grow up learning which plants are friends and which to leave alone, developing a relationship with the forest that goes far deeper than simple resource extraction. The Forager's Map transforms residents from visitors in the woods to knowledgeable partners with the land, capable of finding sustenance and medicine while leaving the forest healthier than they found it.

Benefits

The Forager's Map allows skilled foragers to reliably locate 40 pounds of wild edibles, 15 pounds of wild medicinal plants, and 20 pounds of wild mushrooms each month. Characters who study the map before foraging gain advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to find food or track creatures within the Elderwood Grove. This upgrade generates 2 Prestige.
