Storm Calling Spire

Storm Calling Spire

Prerequisite: Canopy Dome
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Storm Calling Spire rises an astonishing one hundred and forty feet above the forest floor, a towering ash tree that has stood in the Ancient Heart for over four centuries. Its trunk is remarkably straight, reaching skyward like a natural monument before finally branching at its uppermost reaches. The bark is silvery-grey and deeply furrowed with age, creating vertical channels that run the entire length of the trunk. When Goodberry's magic infused this ancient giant with weather-controlling enchantments, these natural channels began to glow with soft white light during storms, pulsing in rhythm with distant thunder and creating the appearance of lightning trapped within the living wood. The tree's crown extends well above the surrounding canopy, its highest branches reaching into air currents and weather patterns that never touch the forest below.

At approximately sixty feet up the trunk, a platform has been grown from the tree itself, created by encouraging several thick branches to extend horizontally and interweave into a stable circular deck roughly twenty feet in diameter. This is the Storm Caller's Station, the primary working area for druids who wish to commune with the Spire and channel its weather magic. Access is provided by a system of carved handholds and footholds that spiral up the trunk, supplemented by strategically placed rope anchors for safety. The platform is partially enclosed by a living dome of smaller branches and leaves that provides shelter from wind and rain while still allowing the Storm Caller to observe the sky in all directions through carefully maintained gaps.

The center of the platform features a smooth depression in the living wood, approximately three feet across and six inches deep, that fills naturally with rainwater during storms and maintains a shallow pool even during dry periods thanks to the tree's own moisture. This pool serves as the primary scrying focus for weather work, its surface reflecting the sky above and allowing the Storm Caller to visualize atmospheric conditions across a wide area. Carved around the pool's rim are symbols representing the eight cardinal and ordinal directions, along with runes for different weather phenomena: rain, wind, lightning, fog, snow, clear skies, and calm. By touching specific combinations of these runes while focusing on the pool, a skilled druid can direct the Spire's magic toward desired meteorological outcomes.

The Spire's magic works by establishing a resonance between the tree and the atmosphere above it. The ash's extensive root system, which spreads across nearly half an acre underground, draws upon earth energies while its towering height connects to air and sky. This dual connection allows it to serve as a bridge between terrestrial and atmospheric forces. When a Storm Caller activates the magic, the tree's wood begins to hum with barely audible vibrations, a sound more felt than heard that seems to travel both up into the sky and down into the earth simultaneously. Birds nesting in the Spire's branches invariably take flight moments before major weather workings, warned by instinct of the gathering energies.

The effects of the Spire's weather control manifest gradually rather than instantly, respecting the natural rhythms of atmospheric systems rather than forcing abrupt changes that could create dangerous imbalances. A Storm Caller might work for twenty minutes to summon needed rain, watching as clouds slowly gather on the horizon and drift toward the grove over the course of an hour. Similarly, clearing away unwanted storms requires patience and sustained focus, gently encouraging weather systems to shift their paths rather than attempting to dispel them through brute magical force. This measured approach ensures that the Spire's interventions work with nature's patterns rather than against them, preventing the ecological disruptions that can result from careless weather magic. During active weather workings, the Spire becomes a spectacular sight, with arcs of pale blue lightning occasionally jumping between its highest branches and the clouds above, while St. Elmo's fire dances along its trunk and the Storm Caller's platform glows with an otherworldly radiance.

Benefits

The Storm Calling Spire allows a druid of at least 7th level to perform weather rituals once per day, controlling weather patterns within a 5-mile radius of the settlement. These rituals require 30 minutes of concentration at the Storm Caller's Station and can produce the following effects (chosen when the ritual begins): summon beneficial rain for crops, clear away approaching storms (prevent weather-based damage for 24 hours), call lightning during storms (the druid can use call lightning at will for 1 hour without expending spell slots, though they must remain at the platform), create favorable winds (grant a +10 bonus to any wind-dependent travel leaving from or arriving at the settlement), or bring gentle snow (create ideal winter conditions for the forest ecosystem). The Spire also functions as an early warning system, allowing anyone at the Storm Caller's Station to predict weather changes up to 48 hours in advance with perfect accuracy within the 5-mile radius. In emergencies, the Spire can be used to summon a powerful localized storm as a defensive measure (functions as control weather spell, usable once per week). The Storm Calling Spire generates 10 Prestige, reflecting the settlement's impressive command over natural forces and the awe-inspiring sight of the enchanted tree towering above the forest.
