Satyr Revels

Satyr Revels

Prerequisite: Pixie Ambassador
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Satyr Revels transform the Elderwood Grove into a place of legendary celebration once each month, drawing fey creatures from throughout the surrounding lands and even from the Feywild itself to join mortals in nights of unbridled festivity. When Goodberry manifests this upgrade, it creates the Revelry Glade, a spacious clearing nestled in a particularly vibrant section of the forest where the trees grow in a natural amphitheater formation. The glade's floor is carpeted with springy turf that never becomes muddy regardless of weather or dancing feet, and wildflowers bloom here in impossible profusion, their colors shifting subtly throughout the evening to match the mood of the celebration. Smooth boulders arranged around the perimeter provide seating for those who need to rest between dances, while natural alcoves in the surrounding trees offer spaces for more intimate conversations or quiet reflection away from the main festivities.

At the heart of the Revelry Glade stands a permanent stage crafted from a massive fallen oak that Goodberry has preserved and shaped without diminishing its natural beauty. The wood has been smoothed and sealed to create a performance platform large enough for entire bands or dance troupes, with acoustics that carry music throughout the glade with perfect clarity. Growing from the stage itself are living grape vines heavy with fruit that ripen magically on the night of each revel, providing fresh grapes and the raw material for the evening's wine. Strings of bioluminescent fungi hang between the trees surrounding the glade, dormant most of the month but glowing with gentle rainbow colors during revels, providing illumination that shifts and pulses in rhythm with the music.

The revels themselves occur on the night of the new moon each month, when darkness provides the perfect canvas for fey lights and magical displays. As dusk falls, satyrs begin arriving from their glades and hidden places throughout the forest, bringing with them pipes, drums, lyres, and other instruments. They are followed by an ever-changing assortment of other fey creatures: pixies who flit through the air trailing sparkles of light, dryads who emerge from their trees for this one night of carefree celebration, sprites carrying baskets of enchanted fruits, and occasionally more exotic visitors like nymphs, treants who sway in time with the music, or even unicorns who permit children to pet their silvery coats. The Pixie Ambassador always attends, using the occasion to introduce new fey arrivals and smooth over any tensions that might have arisen during the previous month.

The celebrations follow a loose but traditional structure that balances wild spontaneity with just enough organization to prevent chaos. The evening begins with a Grand Feast where mortals and fey alike share food and drink, with the settlement providing hearty fare like roasted meats, fresh breads, and vegetable dishes while the fey contribute their own delicacies like honeycakes that grant temporary night vision, berries that make everything taste sweeter for an hour, or wines that cause those who drink them to speak in rhyme until sunrise. After the feast comes the Dancing Hour, where satyrs lead increasingly complex and energetic dances that start simple enough for anyone to join but gradually become wild whirling celebrations that only the most nimble can maintain. Music fills every moment, sometimes planned performances by skilled bard visitors, sometimes spontaneous jam sessions where mortal and fey musicians try to outdo each other, and sometimes simple folk songs where everyone joins in the chorus.

The benefits of these monthly celebrations extend far beyond simple entertainment. The revels serve as a release valve for the settlement, giving citizens a scheduled opportunity to set aside the serious work of building and maintaining their community and simply celebrate life, nature, and joy. Friendships form between mortals and fey during these gatherings, relationships that prove valuable when problems arise requiring fey assistance or understanding. Children who grow up attending revels develop an intuitive understanding of fey nature and customs that serves them well throughout their lives. The wild fey magic that saturates the glade during celebrations lingers for days afterward, causing plants to grow more vigorously, inspiring artists with vivid dreams, and generally infusing the settlement with creative energy. Most importantly, the revels demonstrate to the broader fey community that the Elderwood Grove truly honors the spirit of harmony between civilization and wild nature, attracting positive attention from powerful fey beings who might otherwise ignore or oppose the settlement's existence. The Satyr Revels become one of the settlement's defining characteristics, spoken of in distant lands as proof that mortals and fey can not merely coexist but genuinely celebrate together.
