Living Loom

Living Loom

Prerequisite: Wickerworks Shop
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Living Loom occupies a spacious circular chamber within a grove of silver birch trees, their white bark glowing softly in dappled sunlight. The structure itself is grown rather than built, with four massive willow trees forming the corners of the workspace, their branches carefully trained over decades to weave together overhead into a living roof that provides shelter while allowing gentle breezes to flow through. The walls are formed from living lattices of wisteria and honeysuckle vines, constantly blooming in rotation to fill the air with delicate fragrances that workers find both calming and inspiring. The floor consists of smooth river stones set in intricate spiral patterns, designed to encourage meditative focus as weavers pace around the central loom during their work.

At the heart of the chamber stands the titular loom, a magnificent construction that blurs the line between tool and living organism. The frame is formed from ironwood that has been shaped through decades of patient druidic guidance, creating uprights and crossbeams of exceptional strength without a single cut or nail. Living vines of silverthorne, a rare plant that produces fiber as strong as spider silk, grow directly from the loom's base and climb the frame, constantly regenerating as they are harvested for thread. The heddles and reed are carved from the bones of trees that died naturally in the Ancient Heart, their wood so ancient and dense it has turned nearly to stone, yet remains workable through applications of specialized oils derived from the sap of awakened oaks. The entire structure pulses with a subtle verdant energy, visible to those with magical sight as soft green luminescence that flows through the grain of the wood.

The loom operates through a symbiotic partnership between crafter and creation. Weavers sit at a bench grown from living wood that adjusts its contours to provide perfect support, their hands working in rhythm with the gentle swaying of the living vines that feed thread onto the shuttle. As they work, they sing traditional weaving songs passed down through druidic circles, their voices harmonizing with the whisper of wind through the wisteria walls. This combination of physical craft, vocal resonance, and focused intent causes the natural magic of the grove to infuse itself into the developing fabric, thread by thread. The resulting textiles possess no flashy enchantments or obvious powers, but rather embody the patient, enduring magic of the forest itself.

Materials processed through the Living Loom gain subtle but valuable properties that manifest over time. Garments woven here develop the ability to mend minor tears and fraying during periods of rest, the fibers literally growing back together like healing skin when given a few hours of stillness. Fabrics naturally resist staining from dirt and common spills, water beading and rolling off the surface rather than soaking in. Most remarkably, clothing made from these textiles adjusts gradually to seasonal changes, the weave tightening minutely in winter to provide better insulation and loosening in summer to improve breathability, always keeping the wearer comfortable without any conscious activation required. These properties emerge not from arcane formulae or trapped spell energies, but from the materials remembering their living origins and maintaining a ghostly echo of the growth and adaptation they knew as plants.

The workshop includes several auxiliary stations surrounding the central loom. Spinners work at wheels made from aged oak, transforming raw fibers from flax, hemp, wool, and exotic plants into thread with perfect consistency. Dye vats hewn from single pieces of hollowed log contain preparations made from forest flowers, bark, berries, and minerals gathered from the Crystal Streams, producing colors that never truly fade. A washing area fed by a diverted stream allows craftspeople to prepare materials and clean finished works, the flowing water having been blessed by the local water spirits to enhance any natural properties in fabrics passed through it. Storage alcoves carved into the living walls hold completed textiles, the constant circulation of fresh air preventing any mustiness while the ambient magic of the space helps preserve the fabrics' special qualities indefinitely.

Benefits

The Living Loom produces up to 50 square yards of magically-enhanced fabric per week. These textiles possess three natural properties: they slowly repair minor damage (fully mending small tears or fraying within 8 hours of rest), they resist common stains and repel water without becoming truly waterproof, and they adjust their insulating properties slightly based on ambient temperature. The facility generates 500 gold per month from textile sales and special commissions. This structure generates 8 Prestige.
