Ent Alliance

Ent Alliance

Prerequisite: Grove Awareness, Awakening
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Ent Alliance begins not with ritual but with invitation and negotiation. Duke Hotaru Wyrmwhisper, guided by the wisdom of the Sentient Tree Network and aided by his most experienced druids, ventures deep into the untamed wilderness beyond the dimensional bubble to seek out one of the wandering ent clans that still roam the ancient forests of Xeres. Ents are notoriously difficult to find, moving at their own patient pace and keeping to places where the old growth still stands tall and proud. When contact is finally made, it takes weeks of careful discussion conducted in the slow, deliberate manner that ents prefer, each word considered for hours before being spoken. The Duke must prove the grove's commitment to living in harmony with nature, demonstrate the settlement's respect for trees and growing things, and convince the ents that the Elderwood Grove represents something worth protecting. Only when the ent elder, a towering oak-ent named Deeproot who has lived for over three thousand years, agrees to visit and inspect the grove does the true alliance become possible.

When Deeproot and his clan of twelve ents first enter the Elderwood Grove, the forest itself seems to hold its breath in anticipation. The ents stand between eighteen and twenty-five feet tall, their bodies formed from living wood with bark-covered skin, limbs that branch like trees, and faces that emerge from gnarled trunks showing eyes as deep and old as time itself. Each ent resembles the species of tree from which they originated, with oak-ents showing thick, furrowed bark and broad forms, while ash-ents stand taller and more slender with smoother bark in shades of gray. Maple-ents display distinctive patterns in their bark like the leaves of their tree-kin, and birch-ents present bark that peels in pale, papery layers. They move with surprising grace despite their size, their footsteps causing the earth to tremble gently, their passage leaving temporary impressions in the soil that fill quickly with fresh spring water. Upon completing their inspection of the grove, walking every trail and examining every ancient tree, Deeproot declares the Elderwood Grove worthy, a place where the old ways are remembered and respected, and the clan agrees to stay.

The ents establish their dwelling places at key points throughout the grove, creating a protective ring around the settlement's core. During daylight hours or when no threat is present, the ents often stand motionless for hours or even days, appearing so much like natural trees that visitors sometimes walk past without realizing what they are seeing. In this state, they root themselves lightly into the soil, drawing sustenance and remaining in communion with the forest around them. However, they can animate instantly when needed, uprooting and moving with surprising speed for beings of their size. The ents patrol the grove's boundaries regularly, following routes that take weeks to complete given their deliberate pace, but covering every inch of the territory with thorough attention. They pay special attention to the Ancient Heart, recognizing the Grandfather Oak and other elder trees as beings worthy of particular respect and protection.

The presence of the ents transforms the security of the Elderwood Grove in fundamental ways. Each ent possesses immense physical strength, capable of uprooting smaller trees to use as weapons, hurling boulders the size of wagons, or simply crushing intruders with their massive limbs. Their bark-like skin provides natural armor that turns aside most weapons, while their wooden bodies prove highly resistant to fire due to a natural sap that dampens flames. Beyond their combat capabilities, the ents serve as teachers and advisors, sharing knowledge accumulated over millennia about forest management, the care of ancient trees, and the ways of the natural world. They tell stories of forests that existed before human civilization, of seasons that lasted decades, of trees so massive they took an hour to walk around. Young druids sit at their roots for days, learning patience and the long view that sees beyond single lifetimes.

Maintaining the Ent Alliance requires the settlement to uphold certain agreements made during the original negotiations. No healthy tree may be cut without an ent's explicit permission, and only dead or dying timber may be harvested freely. The settlement must actively work to expand the forest, planting new trees each season and nurturing them to health. Any threat to the grove or its trees must be addressed swiftly and decisively, showing that the alliance flows both ways. In return, the ents defend the grove with unwavering dedication, viewing it as their sacred charge. They participate in settlement councils when matters affect the forest, their voices carrying the weight of ages. They celebrate the changing seasons with the community, their deep, rumbling songs during equinox ceremonies adding harmonies that seem to resonate with the earth itself. The Ent Alliance represents the ultimate partnership between settlement and nature, guardians and home, ancient wisdom and young hope growing together toward a shared future.

Benefits

The Ent Alliance provides the settlement with twelve permanent ent guardians, each equivalent to a CR 8 creature. The ents patrol continuously, providing automatic detection of any threats within the grove. In combat, each ent can deliver devastating melee attacks, animate trees to fight alongside them, and use their massive strength to create difficult terrain or defensive barriers. The ents grant a +10 bonus to all Intimidate checks against potential aggressors, as their mere presence deters most threats. They provide expert consultation on all matters related to forest health and ancient natural lore, granting a +6 bonus to Knowledge (nature) checks about trees, old-growth forests, or forest ecology. The ents can also serve as message carriers, their ability to move through any forested terrain without leaving a path making them ideal for secure communications. The alliance generates 15 Prestige, reflecting the extraordinary achievement of securing the permanent protection and friendship of these legendary beings.
