Description
The Elemental Groves represent the pinnacle of natural magic integration within the Elderwood settlement, four carefully positioned clearings that form a perfect compass rose around the Primal Sanctum at the center. Goodberry's dimensional magic has attuned each grove to one of the four classical elements, not by forcing artificial constructs into the forest but by amplifying and concentrating the natural elemental energies that already existed within different areas of the woodland. The result is four unique environments, each one a pure expression of its element, yet all remaining fundamentally part of the living forest that contains them.
The Grove of Living Stone lies to the north, where the bedrock rises closest to the surface and ancient boulders push up through the earth like sleeping giants. Here, the ground itself seems more awake, more present than anywhere else in the settlement. Stones slowly grow over decades, adding layer upon layer of mineral deposits. Crystal formations sprout from cliff faces like frozen flowers. The trees that grow here have roots that merge seamlessly with the rock, their wood taking on properties of stone without losing their organic nature. Moss-covered standing stones arranged in geometric patterns hum with earth energy, and those who sit upon them report feeling grounded, stable, connected to the deep bones of the world beneath their feet. The air smells of fresh-turned soil and mineral-rich stone, and every footstep on the path seems to resonate with the ancient bedrock far below.
The Grove of Endless Wind occupies the eastern edge where the forest opens toward higher ground and constant breezes flow through the trees. The canopy here grows thinner by design, allowing wind to pass freely while still providing shelter. Specially cultivated trees bend and sway with exaggerated grace, their branches creating musical sounds as air passes through them. Wind chimes made from hollow reeds and carved wood hang from every available branch, their constantly changing songs creating an ever-shifting symphony. The breeze here never completely stops, maintaining a perpetual gentle flow that can intensify to strong gusts when elemental power builds. Platforms and meditation spaces built high in the swaying branches allow druids to feel the wind's full force while remaining safely anchored. Seeds and pollen drift constantly through the air, visible in shafts of sunlight, and those who spend time here find their thoughts becoming clearer, more mobile, freed from the weight of earthbound concerns.
The Grove of Gentle Flame sits to the south in a clearing where sunlight penetrates most strongly throughout the day. This is not a place of destructive wildfire but of warm, nurturing heat and transformative energy. The trees surrounding the clearing have bark that feels perpetually sun-warmed, and their leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold regardless of season. At the grove's center, a natural arrangement of heat-resistant stones creates a fire pit where flames burn continuously, fed by special resinous wood that produces minimal smoke and maximum light. The fire never spreads beyond its designated bounds, constrained by both physical barriers and elemental attunement that keeps it forever controlled. Copper and bronze fixtures throughout the grove catch and reflect the firelight, creating dancing patterns of illumination even at night. The warmth here is constant and comforting, never too hot, promoting growth and encouraging transformation without causing harm.
The Grove of Deep Waters flows to the west, built around a natural spring that bubbles up from underground aquifers to form a clear pool before flowing out in a series of interconnected streams and smaller pools. The water here possesses unusual properties, remaining perfectly clear while supporting abundant aquatic life, staying cool in summer and never freezing solid in winter. Mist rises constantly from the water's surface, creating an atmosphere of gentle humidity that sustains unique plant life. Trees around the water's edge have roots that dangle directly into the pools, drawing nutrients and anchoring the banks. Smooth river stones line every water course, and the constant sound of flowing, dripping, and bubbling water creates a peaceful ambient music. Stone pathways allow visitors to walk across and around the various pools without disturbing the water, and meditation platforms are built at water level so druids can sit with their hands trailing in the cool, energy-rich liquid. The entire grove feels alive with the presence of water in all its forms, from the morning dew on leaves to the deep, dark pool at the center where the spring emerges from depths unknown.
Benefits
Each Elemental Grove provides specific benefits to those who attune to it. A druid who spends 1 hour meditating in a grove gains attunement to that element for 24 hours, granting resistance 10 to the associated energy type (earth grants acid resistance, air grants electricity resistance, fire grants fire resistance, water grants cold resistance) and a +2 bonus to caster level when casting spells with that elemental descriptor. Any spell with an elemental descriptor cast within the matching grove has its save DC increased by 2 and deals an additional 2 points of damage per die rolled. Once per week, a druid may perform a 4-hour ritual at any grove to summon and bind an elemental ally of that type (as per summon nature's ally VII) that serves for 24 hours. The groves can be used to craft elemental-infused magic items, granting a +5 bonus to relevant Craft checks and reducing material costs by 15%. Characters may rest at any grove to recover from environmental damage of the opposing element (fire grove heals cold damage, water grove heals fire damage, earth grove heals acid damage, air grove heals electricity damage) at twice the normal rate. The Elemental Groves generate 18 Prestige, reflecting the settlement's mastery over fundamental natural forces.
