Overview
Thessil is young enough that most of its residents remember the day the first foundation stone was set. It sits at the boundary where the sunlit clearings of the Everspring Glade's Gossamer Glades meet the upper shelves of the Prismatic Terraces, chosen not for beauty (though it has that in abundance) but because the terraced stone and open ground let its founder build the same way he has built everything else in his life: in overlapping, deliberate layers that nothing gets through by accident.
The town itself is small, practical, and still visibly under construction in places, timber-and-stone buildings raised in the steep-roofed style the glade favors, connected by walkways that climb the natural travertine shelves rather than fighting them. It does not yet have the scale or history of Gelderai or the settled permanence of Goodberry. What it has is a specific, deliberate identity: Duke Gorran Ashwell built it, and he built it for people who have spent their lives being told they belong to two worlds and fully to neither.
Thessil answers to the Crown of Haven. Queen Arties Geodegazer-Shadowbane granted Gorran the dukedom and the Everspring Glade itself as his to steward and settle, in recognition of decades of service defending Goodberry and a defensive philosophy she judged worth giving room to grow. He accepted on the condition that Thessil would never turn away someone for what they were born as, only for what they did once they arrived. So far, he has kept that condition personally, at the gate, more than once.
That condition was tested almost immediately. When Gelderai nearly fell to an undead incursion, thousands of its people scattered toward Goodberry, Silmarithil, and Rokoura. Thessil, barely founded and still short on finished buildings, took in roughly two thousand of them anyway, the first true test of the principle the town was built on. Gorran has not pretended this is easy or that Thessil is ready for it. He has simply refused to make it anyone else's problem to solve.
Government
Thessil is a Duchy of Haven, and its Duke is its government in almost every practical sense. Gorran Ashwell holds direct authority over the settlement's defense, its expansion, and its disputes, reporting to Queen Arties and the Haven crown but otherwise governing with the same hands-on, unglamorous attentiveness he once brought to a single guard post in Goodberry, now applied to an entire town. He has not yet appointed a formal council. He says he will, once there are enough people who have earned the trust for it. For now, most decisions of consequence go through him directly, and he is, by every account, easier to reach than most rulers of his rank.
His governing style is defensive in the literal sense before it is anything else. Thessil's layout, its patrol schedules, and its admission policy for newcomers all trace back to the same doctrine he spent decades refining in Goodberry: overlapping zones of protection, contingency for the worst case, and no single point of failure. He extends the same principle to people. A newcomer is not required to explain their past to be let in. They are asked, clearly and without exception, to accept the town's defense and its rules once they are inside it.
Culture
Thessil does not have generations of tradition yet. What it has is forming quickly, shaped by a founding population drawn heavily from people who did not entirely fit the cities they came from: half-elves, mongrelfolk, mixed households, and more than a few quiet arrivals who never explained exactly where they were from before. The town's unofficial, oft-repeated line, usually delivered by Gorran himself to anyone who asks what kind of place this is, is simple: "Here, what you're made of matters less than what you build."
- The Founding Stone: The first foundation stone Gorran personally set remains uncovered and visible in the town's small central square, deliberately left rough and unpolished. New residents are invited, not required, to place a hand on it when they arrive. No ceremony accompanies this. Most people do it anyway.
- Open Gate Hours: Thessil's gate is attended at all hours, and Gorran has made a point of personally working gate duty on a rotating basis alongside whoever else is assigned, a holdover from his own years as a guard that residents have started to view as a statement rather than an eccentricity.
Climate and Environment
Thessil sits entirely within the Everspring Glade and shares its seasonal rhythms in full, from the overflowing spring waterfalls of the Prismatic Terraces to the ice-still hush of its winters. The town's own buildings were designed specifically around the guidance the glade itself seems to offer: steep-roofed structures in the sunlit Gossamer Glades for drainage and daylight, and stone-and-timber shelters built directly against the travertine walls near the Terraces, where fresh water is always close at hand.
Economy and Trade
Thessil's economy is still small and mostly local. What trade exists flows from the glade itself: Tessaline Moss and Lanternbloom spores for alchemists and healers, polished Crystalvine for jewelers and cartographers, and lacquered Thornback Beetle carapace as an unusual decorative export. Gorran's own smithing skill, developed over decades of maintaining his own equipment, has quietly become one of the town's more reliable trades; he still forges weapons and defensive gear personally when he has the time, and the town's fledgling armory owes its early reputation entirely to his hands.
Formal trade routes to Goodberry and the wider Haven cities are being established but are not yet regular. Most goods still move by whoever happens to be traveling that way.
Religion and Spirituality
Religious life in Thessil is personal rather than institutional. No temple has been built yet, and no single faith predominates among a founding population drawn from so many different cities and backgrounds. Residents who practice do so quietly and individually. Gorran has said, when asked, that he intends to build whatever the town actually needs once he understands what that is, rather than assume it in advance.
Law and Order
Thessil's laws are few and enforced personally by Gorran and the small watch he has begun training. The core expectation is straightforward: no violence against another resident without cause, no theft, and full cooperation with the town's defensive drills and gate procedures without exception. Punishment for serious offenses is still being worked out case by case, since the town has not yet needed to establish a formal precedent. Gorran has stated plainly that he would rather be slow and fair about it than fast and wrong.
Food and Drink
Thessil has no signature cuisine of its own yet, a fact residents joke about more than complain over. Meals lean heavily on what the glade provides directly: fish from the Prismatic Terraces' pools, roasted Mirrorleaf Lotus root, and produce grown in the warm, frost-free soil around the glade's Hearthferns. Cooking styles vary household to household, brought in piecemeal from wherever each family originally came from, which residents have started referring to, half-fondly, as "Thessil's only tradition so far."
Animals, Creatures and Mounts
Thessil has introduced no creatures of its own. Its wildlife is the wildlife of the Everspring Glade itself: Prismatic Salamanders in the Terraces' pools, Veilwing Cranes along the water's edge, the shy Gossamer Nymphs of the sunlit clearings the town borders, and River Wyrm-Otters patrolling the waterways, regarded locally, same as everywhere else in the glade, as good omens rather than threats.
Notable Locations
The Ashwell Line
Thessil's primary defensive perimeter, named by residents rather than by Gorran himself, who has been visibly uncomfortable every time someone points out the obvious. It is a physical expression of the doctrine he spent his career developing in Goodberry: overlapping walls, staggered sightlines, and fallback positions built into the town's layout from the first survey stake rather than added after the fact. It is, by design, extremely difficult to breach cleanly.
Notable Residents
Gorran Ashwell
Duke of Thessil, formerly Senior Guard and Defensive Specialist of Goodberry, Gorran was granted the Everspring Glade and its dukedom directly by Queen Arties in recognition of decades of loyal, unglamorous service. A half-elf who spent much of his own life caught between worlds that never fully claimed him, he built Thessil specifically as a place where that particular kind of belonging problem stops being a problem. He still works gate duty on rotation, still forges weapons with his own hands, and still has not gotten entirely used to being called "Your Grace."

The Market
Thessil does not yet have a formal market. Goods change hands directly, by barter or by word sent to Gorran's smithy, and residents expect this to stay true for some time yet.
